OMEP OTAGO SUMMER SEMINAR – 2016
The Otago Chapter of OMEP Aotearoa invites you to a 3-hour professional development and learning seminar:
Dignity or discrimination in the face of diversity: A teacher’s choice everyday in ECE!
WITH
Nola Harvey – Auckland Nola Harvey recently retired from her role as Senior lecturer, ECE languages, literacies and cultures, at the University of Auckland and is now working as an Honorary Academic in research and professional development teams. She has extensive experience in non-government organisations (NGO) such as OMEP, IPA, ACYA and CPAG in her work for children and their families on children’s rights. Nola previously held a position as Supervisor of the AUT Centre for Refugee Education, Early childhood Centre and holds a position on the Ministry of Education’s Centre for Refugee Education Advisory Committee.
This workshop will reflect on national and local policies and practices that can silence the actions and voices of children and families from new migrant communities. Nola will provide participants with opportunities to review and regenerate policies and professional practices that create places for talk, play, dignity and respect in our daily exchanges and experiences in early childhood education settings.
1. We will explore ways in which policies, actions, and talk create normalisation and marginalisation for families.
2. We will have time to strengthen our bicultural commitments as a jumping off point for implementing critical multicultural practices.
3. There will be opportunity and provocation to regenerate socially just policies and practices that can ensure reciprocal relations with new migrant children, families and communities. Where?
When?
