Otago Chapter AGM

Posted on 23 September 2014 by Dee Caswell

Next Meeting:  AGM

Monday 29th September 2014 at 7 pm

Education Centre, University of Otago

Union Street East, Dunedin

Helen Collins from Play and Learn Fairfield will present -

Developing a “can do attitude” with preschool children in the outdoors.

Sadly many young children have lost access to the outdoor experiences previous generations have enjoyed.  The outdoors provides infinitely rich opportunities for a deeper learning experience.  Play and Learn Fairfield, a preschool centre has small groups of intrepid explorers who set off into the forest weekly.  The children have significant experiences which include physical, mental and social challenges.

This presentation reports the processes and outcomes of the interaction of       pre-school children with outdoor natural environments.  Teachers have witnessed children developing: perseverance, imagination, the ability to face fears, and leadership and team work skills.  An important philosophy is the “can do” attitude that supports resilience and sets children up for a life time of learning and development.
