OMEP started in Otago in 1993. Lyn Foote was the driving force for the establishment of OMEP in this area. OMEP meetings were seen as a place where practitioners and academics could come together and stimulating discussions take place. Otago, together with Southland OMEP, took on the role of national executive during the three year period 2000-2002. Meetings rotated between Invercargill and Dunedin. Otago OMEP members have continued to take an active part in OMEP nationally, taking on various roles at different times, such as President, International Coordinator, and as executive members. In 2013 Lyn Foote was made a life member in recognition of her services to OMEP locally, nationally and internationally. In 2023, Fiona Ellis was also nominated for life membership for her dedication and longstanding service to OMEP.
The Ōtākou rōpū currently has an active membership and is committed to improving the wellbeing of young children and their families.
